Reproduction in Flowering Plants

The chapter Reproduction in Flowering Plants is very important. Each year many questions are there from this section.
- All living things reproduce their own kind. This is called reproduction.
- Plants reproduce through flowers.
- Fruits are formed through flowers.
- Ferns, mushrooms and moulds reproduce through tiny seed-like structures called ‘spores‘.
- The multiplication or propagation of plant in which new plants grow from any part of the parent is called vegetative propagation.
- Onion, ginger, and potatoes are underground stems.
- Rose, bougainvillea, and sugarcane can be grown by stem cutting.
- Sweet potato is a modified root.
- Bryophyllum reproduces from leaves.
- Plants having weak stems like strawberry reproduce by a structure called runners.
- Layering is the method of reproduction in Jasmine.
- The growth of the baby plant from a seed is called germination.
- The baby plant coming out of a seed is called a seedling.
- The process of spreading seeds to different places is called dispersal of seeds.
- Seeds which are dispersed by wind have wings or tuft of hair on them.
- Seeds dispersed by water such as coconut have a fibrous outer coat, hence it is easily carried away by water.
- Madar (मदार) and cotton seeds are dispersed by wind.
- Seeds dispersed by animals have hooks or spines that attach to the animal’s body and get carried to different places.
- Some fruits on drying explode. The force of explosion disperses the seeds.
- Pea seeds and honestly seeds get dispersed by the explosion.
- Vegetables grow best in soil containing enough minerals.
- Cabbage, peas, cauliflower, carrot, and radish need cool climate.
- Brinjal, pumpkin, and ladies finger grow well in a warm climate.
- Melons, watermelons, potatoes, and onion grow best in sandy soil.
- Paddy grows in wet and clayey soil.
- Wheat grows well in a temperate soil.
- Cotton grows best in black soil.
- Jute grows best in alluvial soil in a hot and wet climate.
- Tea and coffee grow well on hill slopes because they need plenty of heat and water that does not remain standing for a long time near roots.
- To get a high yield of crops:
- Prepare the soil properly.
- Use healthy and ripe seeds for sowing.
- Add manures or fertilizers to the soil.
- Irrigate the soil well.
- Insecticides and pesticides are sprayed on crops to protect them from pest.
- Fungicides can be used to kill microbes which are responsible for the sum of fungal diseases.
- Storage should be done in waterproof, insect proof, airtight and sealed plastic containers.
