• The devices which make our work easier are called simple machines.
• A simple machine can:
  • change the direction of effort.
  • increase the force of the effort.
  • increase the speed
• There are different types of simple machines:

LEVER

LEVER OF 1^st ORDER

• In this case, the fulcrum is in the centre with the effort at one end and the load on the end of the opposite side.
• Claw hammer, scissors and pliers are examples of the lever of 1^st order.

LEVER of 2^nd ORDER

• The lever of this kind is used in a wheelbarrow, a nutcracker, a man rowing a boat.

LEVER OF 3^rd ORDER

• In this kind of lever, the effort is applied at the centre with the fulcrum at one end and the load on the other end.
• Tongs, Bread Knife, Forceps, Hammerhand with a load and filching rods are some common examples.
