Lesson 1.1: Parts of Speech Review (The “Identification” Hack)
Objective: In this lesson, you will learn to identify Nouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs instantly. This is a guaranteed 1-2 mark question in AMU/JMI Law Entrance.
1. The Golden Rule: Context is King
In Entrance Exams, never assume a word is always one part of speech. You must check what the word is doing in that specific sentence.
- Noun: Names a thing, person, or idea. (The water is cold.)
- Verb: Shows action. (He waters the plants.)
- Adjective: Describes a Noun. (It is a water bottle.)
Exam Tip: If you see an underlined word, ask: “What is this word talking about?”
- If it talks about a Noun
It’s an Adjective. - If it talks about a Verb (action)
It’s an Adverb.
2. How to Spot a NOUN (The Naming Word)
Nouns usually answer “Who?” or “What?”.
Super-Hack: The Suffix Trick
If a word ends in these, it is almost always a Noun. Memorize this list:
- -tion / -sion: Education, Tension
- -ment: Government, Management
- -ness: Happiness, Sadness
- -ity: Activity, Purity, Audacity (Asked in AMU 2022)
- -ence / -ance: Intelligence, Importance
- -ship: Kingship (Asked in AMU 2023), Friendship
Exam Example (AMU 2023 PYQ Style):
“Abstract noun of ‘King’ is?”
- Answer: Kingship (Rule: -ship creates abstract nouns).
3. How to Spot an ADJECTIVE (The Detail Word)
Adjectives add details to a Noun. They tell you “What kind?”
Super-Hack: The Suffix Trick
- -ous: Dangerous, Famous
- -ful: Beautiful, Helpful
- -able / -ible: Capable, Visible, ILLEGIBLE (Asked in JMI 2025)
- -al: National, Legal
- -ive: Active, Creative
The “Be” Test:
You can usually put an adjective after “is/am/are”.
- He is intelligent. (Correct
Adjective) - He is intelligence. (Incorrect
Noun)
4. How to Spot an ADVERB (The Action Describer)
Adverbs describe Verbs. They answer “How?”, “When?”, or “Where?”.
The “-LY” Trap:
Most adverbs end in -ly (Slowly, Quickly, Loudly).
- WARNING: Not all “-ly” words are adverbs.
- Friendly person (Describes person
Adjective) - Lovely day (Describes day
Adjective)
- Friendly person (Describes person
Exam Strategy:
Check if the word describes an action.
- “He spoke loudly.” (How did he speak? Loudly
Adverb)
5. The “Tricky Words” (Exam Favorites)
AMU and JMI examiners love words that can change their identity.
A. ROUND (The AMU Favorite)
- Adjective: A round table. (Describes table)
- Noun: The round was difficult. (Name of a game stage)
- Preposition: The boys ran round the tree. (Shows relationship/position)
Asked in AMU 2023 - Verb: The boat rounded the cape. (Action)
B. FAST
- Adjective: A fast bowler. (Describes bowler)
- Adverb: He bowls fast. (Describes how he bowls)
- Note: There is no such word as “fastly”. Never mark “fastly” in an exam.
C. WELL
- Adjective: I am well. (Health condition)
- Adverb: He played well. (How did he play?)
- Noun: The frog is in the well. (Water body)
